WHO WE ARE AND WHERE WE’RE GOING
Welcome to Highland Heritage Woodworks (HHW), a pioneer in the Scottish timber industry, dedicated to demonstrating the untapped potential of locally-sourced timber. Founded three years ago by Guy Phillips and Armands Balams, the team is passionate about locally sourced Scottish timber and driven by a commitment to sustainability and innovation.
At HHW, we blend traditional craftsmanship with modern technology to transform Scottish wood into premium products. The three business pillars being bespoke carpentry, high end cabins and high-quality precision cut lumber from the sawmill. From richly grained Douglas fir floors to bespoke kitchens made from Aberdeenshire elm to unique eco-friendly cabins which blend seamlessly into the countryside. Our range of products is as diverse as the landscape that supplies our timber. Every piece tells a story of heritage, quality, and ecological responsibility.
Our journey initially began as a collaboration between Armands and Guy to create a differentiated carpentry business building on Armands 25 years of experience as a master carpenter combined with Guy’s entrepreneurial approach and passion to do things differently.
We quicky realised that to provide the quality we wanted to give to our customers that we needed more control of our raw material, so we invested in a modest bandsaw mill and timber drying kiln, ensuring the best outcome for the fantastic raw materials Scotland provides.
Fast forward to today and our newly repurposed, bespoke sawmill facility houses: a state of the art wide-band horizontal sawmill from Mebor, Europe’s leading sawmill manufacturer, and a high tech 60m3 SECAL drying kiln with heating provided by a top end biomass boiler. All this gives us a huge step change in production capability, whilst lowering our carbon footprint, allowing us to meet the increasing demands for low-carbon, sustainable building materials.
We are accredited and firm supporters of FSC and PEFC and in March 2024, we reached a milestone by becoming certified holders with Grown in Britain GIB, affirming our commitment to promoting certified homegrown timber. This partnership underscores our dedication to environmental stewardship and supports our mission to help customers reduce the environmental impact.
As we look to the future, Highland Heritage Woodworks is focussed on our “Forest to Front Door” philosophy maximizing the value of each piece of timber and ensuring that nothing goes to waste. We ensure that every product we create not only serves its purpose but also is as sustainable as it can possibly be.
With nearly 80% of the UK’s timber still being imported, we are poised to change the narrative by showing that home-grown timber is not only viable but very desirable
